How We're Honoring Earth Day - April 22, 2024
California Science Center Visit
Frost Equity Initiative recognizes the importance of equipping our future leaders to solve some of Earth's most pressing environmental issues. Dealing with the Earth's volatile weather patterns and disaster risks, such as forest fires, flooding, global warming, and drought, will require creativity and perseverance.
This month, we visited the California Science Center in Los Angeles to learn about sustainability initiatives worldwide. Our visit included a 3D IMAX movie, Cities of the Future. The movie highlighted what different countries were doing to fight global warming. We learned that Amsterdam was a leader in climate change technology. Their government is phasing out natural gas and aims for all traffic to be emission-free as early as the 2030s. They support solar and wind energy use and electric transport options. Amsterdam is also a city of canals. They have built many dikes, storm surge barriers, and pumps to manage flooding.
You can find more information on visiting the California Science Center here. The museum entrance is free. However, use the keyword INNOVATE to purchase IMAX movie or special exhibit tickets.
If you do not reside in Los Angeles area, you can find Cities of the Future in a theater near you and resources for your learner here: Cities of the Future.
STEAM Programming Curriculum
Last year, our Executive Director / Director of training taught her first sustainability classes with Green Schools. We are excited to work sustainability into our coding games and science clubs.
Are you composting?
You may be wondering what composting is. Composting is a natural process of recycling organic matter such as leaves, tree trimmings, food scraps, and more into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich the soil.
According to the EPA, food is the most common material sent to landfills in the U.S., comprising 24.1 percent of municipal solid waste. When yard trimmings, wood, and paper/paperboard are added to food, these organic materials comprise 51.4 percent of municipal solid waste in landfills. Also, only 5% of compostable waste is composted in the U.S.
